NorthWestern Energy has implemented a new electronic payment service to make it fast and easy for you to pay your energy bills.

NorthWestern Energy is using a new payment processing system, Paymentus, to process credit and debit card payments and one-time checking or savings account payments.

If you were using Speedpay, this change will require you to re-enroll through Paymentus for recurring credit and debit card payments, as well as pay by text and text messaging. We value the security of your personal data, and therefore did not want to transfer your payment information to a new platform without your approval.

This change will not impact customers who are enrolled in NorthWestern Energy’s EZ Pay (recurring check and savings account) program.

Other future enhancements will include:

  • Additional self-service payment options
  • An improved payment page on our website
  • Mobile payments on any device
  • Payment reminders and notifications

If you have questions, please contact us at 888-467-2669 in Montana or 800-245-6977 in South Dakota or Nebraska.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the change take place?
NorthWestern Energy transitioned to Paymentus on Monday, Nov. 16.

Why did NorthWestern make this change?
Paymentus provides a modern, safe, easy-to-use payment platform. Over the coming months, NorthWestern will release additional features to provide even more options for our customers.

I never used Speedpay. Do I need to do anything?
This change primarily affects customers who were paying their bills with Speedpay, via the internet, text, or voice system. This change does not affect recurring ACH (checking or savings) accounts.

What do I do if I am enrolled in one of Speedpay’s progams such as recurring credit or debit card payments, text notifications or have a future dated payment?
NorthWestern Energy values the security of your personal data and chose not to transfer payment information to Paymentus. Beginning Nov. 16, customers can enroll in recurring credit and debit card payments, text notifications and future date a payment at NorthWesternEnergy.com by accessing My Energy Account. If you had a recurring credit or debit card payment scheduled before Nov. 16, the payment will be processed with Speedpay. If you received a text notification from Speedpay, you can reply through Nov. 16 to make a payment. For any future dated payments scheduled through Nov. 16, NorthWestern Energy will receive the scheduled payment. If you have a payment scheduled with Speedpay after Nov. 16, the payment will not be processed and an alternate payment method will need to be made.

What if I had a payment scheduled with Speedpay?
If you have a payment scheduled with Speedpay on or prior to Nov. 16, the payment will process as scheduled. If you have a payment scheduled after Nov. 16, the payment will not be processed and an alternate payment method will need to be made. Our new electronic payment service will also provide scheduled payments, which can be scheduled beginning Nov. 16 by visiting NorthWesternEnergy.com/paymybill.

What is the processing fee to make a payment with Paymentus?
Our partnership with Paymentus, offers a reduced processing fee for agent-assisted payments and credit and debit card payments. The processing fee will be $1.99. Free one-time checking or savings account payments can be made by calling Paymentus at 833-970-2262 for English and 833-970-2263 for Spanish or visiting NorthWesternEnergy.com/paymybill.

Why is there a processing fee associated with using Paymentus?
Paymentus is a third-party vendor who assesses a processing fee of $1.99 to process credit and debit card payments. NorthWestern Energy does not receive any part of the fee and it is non-refundable. Our partnership with Paymentus allowed us to negotiate a lower processing fee.

To avoid a fee, we do offer free payment options, including EZPay (recurring check and savings account payments), self-serve one-time checking or savings account payments, payment drop boxes located at one of our customer service locations or by mail.

Is there a limit on how many payments I can make?
Yes, we do set limits on the number and dollar amount of payments. This allows us to manage the processing fee. For each NorthWestern Energy account, two payments can be made every 30 days. For electronic checks, the payment limit is $10,000 for each payment, and for credit and debit cards the payment limit is $2,500 for each payment. A combination of these payments types can be made in the 30 days, for example, one electronic check and one credit card payment.

Why is there a limit on how many payments I can make?
In order to keep the processing fee as low as possible, limits are placed on the amount of payments. Another reason for placing limits on payments is to limit exposure to our customers checking and savings accounts and credit and debit card accounts.
